Spring Has Sprung

Today is the spring (vernal) equinox, which also means it is the official start of spring (at least according to my calculations – some people say it was yesterday, some people think it’s tomorrow; I just went with the average and picked the middle day.)

The equinox plays a role in many of the springtime holidays – Ostara, Easter, Passover, etc. Themes abound, from the idea of awakening from winter’s slumber, renewal and rebirth (a theme especially relevant for Christians) and the idea of planting the seeds that will eventually become the bounty of the summer.

While I always say that autumn is my favorite season, there’s something so fantastic about spring. For starters, my birthday falls just before the start of the season, which, in my opinion, is reason alone for a month-long celebration. But there’s also this get sense of anticipation – winter is (mostly) over and I can break out the flip-flops and short sleeve shirts (like I did this week), but there is more than just increased sartorial choices.

Spring is a time to rid myself of the dark and gloom of winter and embrace the openness and airiness of spring. And, in my own way, I’m prepping myself for the coming months. I’m using this time to establish new routines, like going to the gym in the mornings, so that when the weather gets really nice, I have a foundation I can build upon and I’ll be one step closer to accomplishing some of my goals.

It’s also about maintaining a better sense of balance. In the winter, my instinct is to hibernate and close myself off. But spring – and spring weather – just about begs me to put myself out into the world more often. So while I can still indulge in my reading obsession, I can do it while sitting on my balcony, feeling the sun and breathing the (relatively) clean air.

If I were in a particularly over the top mood, I might even compare myself to a caterpillar, emerging from her cocoon as a butterfly, but I’ll resist that specific urge. Instead, I’ll just say that the arrival of spring means we can shrug off the drudgery of winter and start fresh with a new perspective. Flip-flops not required, but certainly encouraged.
