Trust Women

Today is the 37th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade which gave women the right to choose and made abortion legal in this country. NARAL Pro-Choice America, one of best-known pro-choice organizations in the country (and founded in part by Betty Friedan in the 1960′s), is hosting the Blog for Choice day today.
NARAL is asking pro-choice bloggers – both known and unknown – to respond to a topic and publish the resulting post today, January 22nd, in honor of the Roe v. Wade anniversary.
This year’s topic, in honor of Dr. George Tiller, who often wore a button that simply read, “Trust Women,” asks women: What does Trust Women mean to you?
I’ve been thinking about this all day and here’s what I’ve come up with:
I trust women…
- to know and understand their own bodies and to take ownership of their health;
- to make the decision they think is best for them and their families – whatever that decision may be;
- because we are not the weaker sex – indeed, we are stronger than we sometimes realize and we are capable of doing whatever we want to do;
- because we are intelligent, funny, sexy, independent, kind, complex, interesting and amazing people who do not need to be patronized or talked down to; and
- I am one and I don’t need anyone else – least of all the government – making my decisions for me.
Being pro-choice isn’t necessarily about being pro-abortion; it’s about supporting the right to choose, supporting each individual woman’s right to make their own choice, even if you don’t agree with it. Trust that women know that they are doing and trust them to make the decision that is right for them.
Trust women.
