My Love List, Part 2

Happy Thanksgiving! Today is a day for giving thanks and remembering all of those people and things we’re grateful for. I wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving by adding to my Love List, rejoicing in the things that I love, because I’m so blessed to have so much.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you take some time to reflect on the things you love and are thankful for this year.

I love…

  • Staring off into space, getting lost in a daydream, and letting my mind wander to wherever it wants to go. Sometimes, my best thoughts come from just taking a mental break and sometimes I manage to think of some crazy things;
  • The way certain smells (like wood burning in a fireplace or an apple pie baking in the oven) make me feel safe and content;
  • That I’m interested in so many different things and that I’m always excited to learn something new;
  • That I still get excited over the little things, like a new book from the library or the leaves changing color;
  • Dancing when no one is watching;
  • Watching the ’82 version of “Annie” because it brings up good memories of childhood, listening to the tape over and over again;
  • Hugs;
  • That reading a beloved book again for 2nd (or 3rd, 5th or 8th) time is like catching up with an old friend – familiar and new;
  • That Sunday nights mean reconnecting w/ my family through phone calls. I like hearing their voices – makes the distance seem less;
  • Singing in my car along with the radio/ipod, at the top of my lungs, not caring if I’m in tune;
  • Snuggling into oversized sweatshirts, burrowing underneath blankets instead of turning on heat when it gets cold.

As I’ve compiled this Love List, one theme I’ve noticed again and again is how certain things are on my list because something in the present has stirred my memory of the past. I never realized just how connected our memories are to specific, concrete, tangible things. Writing them down as part of this Love List project has made me aware of how strong certain memories are.

What are the specific things in your life that bring up certain memories?
