Ordinary Mer’s Love List

Posted on | October 8, 2009 | No Comments

A few weeks ago, I wrote about The Love List Project, an idea put forth by one of my favorite bloggers, Kristin. Since then, Kristin has used her blog space to write about various aspects of the love list each Friday and the #lovelist hashtag has made it’s way across Twitter.

The idea is to explore what you love the most, what things in your life make you completely you. It’s not about brainstorming a list, but rather paying attention to those moments in life when you realize you really and truly love something.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been writing my own ideas down and now I’m sharing them with you. I specifically decided to expand on a few of them, pushing myself to find out why I loved these things. The rest of my love list items (so far, anyway!) are brief, but no less important. I’ll continue to make updates to the list as I continue to stay mindful of the things I love. And don’t forget to check out Kristin’s posts too.

My Love List

I love…

  • walking along the beach, listening to the waves crash along the shore, squishing sand between my toes, and feeling a sense of calm just being near the open water. I associate the beach with some of my happiest childhood memories (I did grow up in the Ocean State after all!) and water has always been my element.
  • thought-provoking and in-depth conversations about things as trivial as favorite television shows or things are serious as the health care debate. I love picking topics apart and finding out what other people think, challenging myself to defend my beliefs and learn something new in the process.
  • getting lost in a good book, losing myself in the world the author has created, tagging along with the characters as they make their way through life. I love the possibilities that exist in a good book, the way a plot can stir the imagination and the way a great writer can make fictional people seem as real as you or me.
  • when my nephews tell me about something I already know (like Star Wars) from their perspective. I love seeing the world from their point of view, watching them as they discover new things for the first time because it reminds me to take the time to find moments of awe in my own life and encourages me to look at things in a new way.
  • playing board or card games with my family, especially when we’re all crowded around a table together and there’s an equal sense of camaraderie and competitiveness. I love the simple pleasure we get just from being around one another and I love the sense of belonging I feel, knowing there’s at least one place I definitely fit.

I also love…

  • Getting unexpected things in the mail, like a card, a new magazine, or a package I forgot I ordered;
  • Bloggers and/or people I’ve “met” on Twitter who are always inspiring me to be a better writer;
  • The cathartic feeling I get when I write a particularly thoughtful blog post;
  • That I do my best thinking when I’m moving (walking, running, driving, etc.). It makes me feel more productive;
  • The sense of satisfaction you get when you dive into a book discussion with others who are just as passionate about the book as you;
  • That few things are better than great friends, good food and interesting conversations; and
  • Having a job that I’m passionate about, that I can get excited about and knowing that what I do is helping other people.

What’s on your love list?

[P.S. Check out Kristin's blog on November 6th - I'm going to be that week's love list guest post blogger.]
